Tourism picks up in Cuba!

Cuba opened the Meetings and Incentive Travel Market convention, Latin America’s largest travel trade show, on 5 September 2022. The four-day Meetings and Incentive Travel Market convention brought together international hotel associations, tour operators, travel agents, conference organizers and other travel industry players from around the world.

The Communist government-sponsored event was almost certainly an attempt to revive a COVID-19-affected tourism industry normally accounting for 10% of GDP. Indeed, Cuba was far behind other tourist destinations in the region that had opened their borders in 2021. However tourism picks up in Cuba!

Therefore, at the beginning of 2023, the results of the Meetings and Incentive Travel Market convention were very important for many to prove the efforts to revive tourism. While most thought that Cuba would likely struggle to regain its pre-Covid peaks in the short to medium term (especially due to a US travel ban, which would contribute to the ongoing economic malaise and unrest), over 2.2 million tourists visited Cuba in 2022. Tourism picks up in Cuba! That’s an increase of almost 400% compared to the previous year, announced the Cuban Statistics Office (ONEI) on 19 January 2023.
