24 Sep Messinia – An Unspoiled Destination
A mere 2 hours drive from the Greek capital of Athens, Messinia’s lush green landscape and wild mountains will take your breath away.
For those who love history and culture, Messinia is located in the southern west side of Peloponnese, the mother land of the Olympic Games and the Olympic Spirit. Messinia, is an old city and surrounded by ancient ruins such as the ancient theater of Messene and mesmerizing castles from ancient times, ready to be explored and take you to a journey back in time.
The famous castle of Methoni will fascinate you with its beauty, as it occupies the whole area of the cape, the southwestern coast and ends to a small islet.
Santorini might be very high on the list of the best destinations in Greece, but Messinia and the area of Costa Navarino has no reason to be left behind. The long white sandy beaches and the wild mountains will stay in your heart and mind for long time.
Leave your car and take your bike, go through a small track to find Voidokilia beach, one of the most famous and most beautiful beaches of Greece where the crystal green-blue water makes every swim special. For the mountain lovers, you can bike through a thick forest to reach the majestic Kalamari waterfalls and dive in its cold refreshing water.
When in Messinia, the Polylimnio (many lakes) is a place you MUST visit; the 15 pools filled by waterfalls will leave you speechless. Trails through the small villages and around the coast are perfect for a morning run at sunrise and its colors.
