Chilean Patagonia’s Glaciers

Chilean Patagonia: The Ultimate Glacier Experience

There are places on Earth that seem straight out of a dream. Chilean Patagonia is one of them. Here, you will discover a landscape of massive glaciers lost among the mountains. Patagonia is a very wild and sparsely populated area, making it the perfect place to reflect and escape the noise of the city. Considered the 8th wonder of the world and designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. So, come with us to discover some of the most beautiful glaciers of Chilean Patagonia. Just reading this blog will transport you, so imagine experiencing it in person.

Grey Glacier: The blue giant you can’t miss in Chilean Patagonia

This is Grey Glacier, the largest glacier in Chilean Patagonia. It stretches 28 kilometers long and covers approximately 270 square kilometers. You can get there by taking a flight from Santiago to Puerto Natales, followed by a shuttle that will take you directly to Torres del Paine. Expect to pay between €137 and €368 for the journey, depending on the season, plus €31.25 per adult for a three-day pass to the national park.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Chile and have time to explore, I highly recommend visiting the park! There are plenty of activities to enjoy, including hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, and even fishing.

For those who want to reach the famous Grey Glacier, adventurers should plan for a 30 to 40 km trek from the park entrance, with refuges along the way costing between €15 and €40 per night. Alternatively, you can reach the glacier by kayak or boat. A three-hour tour by boat on the Grey lake will take you up close to the glacier, costing around €110 per person.

San Rafael : Where ice meets the ocean

San Rafael Glacier is different from Grey Glacier. If you’re looking for a less touristy spot than Torres del Paine, this is the perfect place. Here, you’ll find yourself in an isolated and wild environment, where few people venture each year. The glacier is located in Laguna San Rafael National Park, flowing into Laguna San Rafael and reaching the Pacific Ocean.

You can access the park by taking a boat from Puerto Chacabuco, which costs €182 per person for a 6.5-hour journey. It’s a long trip, but absolutely worth it!

Moreover, the wildlife is diverse here, you can spot whales, especially during the migration season (from december to april), penguins, and Andean condors soaring over the fjords. In the waters near the glacier, you can also see sea lions.

Walk on a glacier… the most exclusive thing you can do in patagonia !

To finish, if you have the chance, do it! Walking on a glacier is an incredible experience that few people get to have. There’s only one company that offers glacier treks in Chilean Patagonia on Grey Glacier: Big Foot Patagonia. They run three departures a day (08:00, 10:00, 14:30) from October to April.

On the trek, you will walk on the glacier with a group of 2 to 15 people. You don’t need to be a professional, but you should be in good physical condition. The glacier is accessible for most people, so no pressure. You will be equipped with a harness, crampons, helmet, and ice axe, and your guide will take you onto the glacier. Throughout the excursion, you’ll see lagoons, ice wells, crevasses, ice tunnels, and rivers in this ice desert.
