Carnival in Malta: A Colorful and Enchanting Tradition
Carnival in Malta is one of the most eagerly awaited celebrations of the year, a time when the island comes alive with music, spectacular costumes and age-old traditions. The event, which usually takes place in February, is an explosion of color, joy and creativity, and perfectly reflects the island’s festive, community spirit.
A Tradition Rooted in the Middle Ages
Malta’s Carnival dates back to the 16th century, introduced by the Order of the Knights of St. John before Lent. Originally a period of celebration and joy before the start of the 40-day fast, this tradition has continued to the present day.
Spectacular Costumes and Parades

Another popular Carnival tradition in Malta is the Paper Ball Battle, a game in which participants compete in crowded streets by throwing paper balls and confetti. This game, which takes place mainly in the villages, is a way for the Maltese to let off steam, laugh and strengthen their community spirit during the festivities.
Carnival Today: An International Event
Although the roots of the Maltese Carnival are deeply rooted in tradition, the event has evolved into an international celebration. Every year, visitors from all over the world come to Malta to take part in this colorful celebration. The City of Valletta, which was European Capital of Culture in 2018, now hosts some of the biggest parades and events, attracting ever larger and more diverse crowds.
